The lecture was delivered by Mr Rishi Kant, Assistant Director, Ministry of Railways, Govt of India, New Delhi.
The expert Mr. Rishi Kant began his discussion by throwing light on two most significant events of current interest. First the issue of current demonetization and second the issue of US elections, the winning of Donald Trump and how it would lay an impact the economy of India. His critical evaluation on both the above mentioned issues kept the students engrossed and they participated enthusiastically in the discussion.
The speaker further pointed out how the transportation system serves to be a crucial part of the infrastructure of a nation. He highlighted the significant role played by the transportation sector in promoting different modes of accessibility (people to people, people to institution, business to people, business to business and the like), supports employment, the economy and promotes overall mobility and growth of a nation. He emphasized on the historical role played by transport and explained its relation with concepts of colonialism, industrialization, revolution and migration. He stated that Transport is an important part of India’s economy but it is poor in comparison with international standards. Since the economic liberalization of the 1990s, infrastructure development has progressed rapidly; today there are a variety of modes of transport by land, water and air. However, he mentioned that, India’s relatively low GDP per capita has meant that access to transport has not been uniform. He underlined the various constraints, such as, lack of finances, technology, resources, skill and policy making that the transport sector is confronted with.
The lecture enlightened the students on the subject of transport, its role, its significance and how its efficiency is linked to the overall growth and development of a nation. The students gained an understanding of how the different modes of transport contribute each day towards betterment and enhancement of a country.
