An Industrial visit to ZTE Corporation was organized at 12th march 2014 for B.Tech Computer Science students to familiarize them with various communication technologies and emerging trends in the field of communication devices. ZTE Corporation is world’s fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer as measured by 2012 unit sales and the world’s fifth- largest telecoms equipment maker measured by 2012 revenues after Ericsson, Huawei, Samsung and Nokia-Siemens.
Visit to a manufacturing and repair plant at Manesar was scheduled for second semester computer science students for giving an overview of computer technologies in the field of telecommunication and networking. For this purpose, Mr. Veerender (Assistant Manager) from ZTE Corp. gave a presentation about their company and subsequently about telecommunication technologies by briefly explaining GSM, CDMA, Wi-Fi, WiMax, Bluetooth, EDGE, and different generations of telecom network (1G, 2G, 2.5G, 3G, 4G), EM Spectrum, steps involved in telecommunication (frequencies used, types of modulation methods, types of propagation and various terminologies used in the language of communication methods). They also explained the mobile phone telecommunication procedures in which they described various related terms like roles of mobile station (MS), BTS (Base transmission and receiver),BSC( base Station Control), MSC( mobile switching center) etc. In view of smart phone technologies, the differentiation between a feature phone and a smart phone was explained in detailed manner. Examples were given at each point so that students could grasp the basic idea properly. Students were particularly excited to compare their own mobile smart phones with respect to features discussed in the presentation.
After one hour lecture session a brief tour of three ZTE sections. “Manufacturing unit” in which there were circuit printing machine, SMT (for surface mounting of circuits components), computerized soldering machine, AOI (automatic inspection Machine). Two other sections dedicated to repair and testing of manufactured components were explained to students and some basic mobile phone and calling card circuits were repaired in front of them. Finally the quality control section was explored where final quality assurance is sealed before putting up final product in the market.
Students were elated to visit such a company where they could see many varieties of tasks being performed before them. A lot of questions were answered by professionals from ZTE Corporation and students were well satisfied with the answers. Students are now looking forward to take up courses related to communication technology with a greater zeal.
