1st National Workshop on “Cyber Security” at GD Goenka University

A 2-day national workshop on ‘Cyber Security’ was organised by GD Goenka School of Engineering on 29th & 30th December 2016 to create awareness about security and privacy in the cyber world. This theme has become more relevant than ever before considering the current Digital India push by Govt. of India. The workshop started with a welcome speech from Prof. (Dr.) Sudeep Sharma, Asst. Dean, School of Engineering, GD Goenka University.

On the first day, 5 renowned keynote talks were delivered by cyber security experts. Mr. Rodney D. Ryder, Advisor, Ministry of Communication and Information Security, Govt. of India was the first keynote speaker, who talked on “Cyber Laws in India” and cited several important aspects of IT ACT 2000 and Amendment ACT 2008.

The second keynote talk was on “Cyber Safety in Daily Life” by Mr. Rakshit Tandon, Director, Executive Council - Council of Information Security, Consultant Internet and Mobile Association, Cyber Crime Unit. He cited several real time cases which can be associated with anybody. His talk was very impressive where he talked about several cases involving Whatsapp, Paytm, Credit Cards and focused on how we may get trapped and what to do to avoid these traps.

Prof. Brajendra Panda (University of Arkansas, USA), visiting professor at GD Goenka University, delivered his talk on ‘Basic Overview of Cyber Security’. He started his talk from the point of view of a security expert and a coder. He talked about access control list, authentication, authorization, data integrity, and security from viruses.

Mr. Pavan Duggal, (Advocate, Supreme Court of India) delivered his talk via skype on “Cyber Security and Cyber Law in India”. He gave interesting facts on what’s going on the cyber highway and how countries are concerned about their cyber territory. Mr. Vishal, Sr. Service Delivery Leader, American Express delivered his talk on “Cyber Security Third Party Risk Management”.

“Once you are on the cyber highway you cannot take for granted that your data is secured”, “Nothing remains private in cyber world”, “We need to increase awareness about cyber-crimes” and “Unawareness about cyber law cannot be an excuse” were some of the takeaways from the first day’s sessions.

On day two, the first session by Prof. Brajendra Panda was primarily focussed on the ‘Digital Forensics’. One more session by Mr. Sahil Baghla (CEO, EH1 Infotech) covered ‘Mobile Security’, ‘Hands On Ethical Hacking’, ‘USB Forensic in Police Forensic way’, and ‘Protecting Smartphone from Hacking in a Shared Wi-Fi Network’, and ‘Website Hacking & Security’.

The participants felt that the workshop organized by GD Goenka School of Engineering, has created an impact on them and their perception towards cyber world has now changed a lot.
