Dean Prof (Dr) Pradeep Goel had connected with Gateway Rail Freight Ltd ( GRFL) and facilitated an educational field trip for students of School of Management. On March 8th, 2017, 38 students of BBA Sem VI and BCOM Sem VI accompanied by 2 Faculty members, Dr. Sanjay Mangla and Ms. Sudipta Sen Gupta, visited GRFL\'s Inland Container Depot at GarhiHarsaru, Haryana.

Gateway Rail Freight Ltd (GRFL), is a unit of port-based logistics company Gateway Distriparks Ltd (GDL) and is the largest private firm in the Inland Container Depot (ICD) sector, operating 7 Dry Ports or ICDs in the country, including at Garhi Harasaru, Haryana. The facility includes India\'s first RORO (roll-on-roll-off) service via rail link. Gateway Rail owns and operates a fleet of 28 trains and 300 road trailers at its rail linked terminals. Gateway Rail operates regular container train service from these ICDs/Dry Ports to the maritime ports at NhavaSheva, Mundra and Pipavav, transporting EXIM cargo as well as domestic containers. All major shipping lines operate from these terminals for both export and import.

Capt. Ritesh Chopra, DGM-Operations of the ICD, took a session with the students, covering the following topics:

    • Operations of Dry Ports (ICDs)

    • Overview of Container shipping

    • Brokers/ Agents role

    • Scope and activities of Freight Forwarders

    • Process of dispatch via Shipping Lines

  • Customs & Excise Procedures

Post the presentation the team was taken around the 90 acre ICD and were shown the checking points, domestic warehousing facilities, Customs offices, bonded warehouse and the loading bays, followed by the transport section and the railway link area, with RORO facility. The students were highly interested and engaged during the entire session and the tour that followed. They were curious to understand the logistical challenges that may be overcome with Dry Ports and the role of Freight Forwarders and Shipping lines in ensuring smooth Exports. They could related what they learnt to various aspects of their lessons on International Marketing, taught by Ms Sen Gupta and EXIM Policy taught by Dr. Mangla.
