SOL GDGU conducted an RTI workshop on April 01, 2016, which was a huge success with Mr. Ramesh Inder Singh, a holder of Padma Shri, as the guest speaker. A former IAS, he is also the incumbent Chief Information Commissioner of the State of Punjab and a well known RTI activist. He was also the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar during Operation Blue Star, the military action at the Golden Templein 1984 and has served as the Chief Secretary of Punjab. He enlightened our students about the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 and the immense power this act gives the citizens of the largest democracy, India.
The RTI Act of 2005 promises to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority. This Act was formed to enable people to responsibly scrutinize government officials and legal processes. It emanates from what the Indian Constitution guarantees itself. Under Article 19 (1) (a) the Constitution guarantees every citizen freedom of speech and expression with certain reasonable restrictions. In simple words, to allow exercise of freedom of speech and expression effectively the country needs an informed civil society.
Our students were driven by Mr. Singh charismatic personality and were encouraged by his life experiences. He motivated us to utilize the power we have in order to ensure good governance in India.
