Communication students file RTI applications to develop news reports

The School of Communication students have filed 11 applications seeking information under the Right to Information Act from the Gurgaon Police and New Delhi Municipal Council.

The information requests are part of media studies where students learn how to obtain information to prepare news reports.

They will now use the information to develop news stories, a few of which may even be shared with mainstream newspapers. The remaining will be used to publish a student newspaper.

The topics on which information has been sought are;

  • Cases of theft and rape on Sohna Road
  • Vehicle thefts in Gurgaon in 2015
  • Chain snatching in Gurgaon in 2014
  • Cases of domestic violence in Gurgaon
  • Cases of eve teasing in Gurgaon during 2014
  • Condition of prisoners in Bhondsi jail
  • Traffic management at HUDA City Centre
  • Status of existing WiFi facilities in New Delhi
  • Cases of rape and molestation in Gurgaon Colleges
  • Accidents at Rajiv Chowk and Badshahpur Crossing in 2014
  • Installation and working of CCTV cameras in New Delhi over the last five years.

The student applications follow an RTI workshop conducted by Prof Anil Dawra of the School of Law. In the workshop, the students learnt the finer points of the path-breaking act, and the procedure to file RTI applications.
