Students Learn Voice Modulation Techniques

Students of the School of Communication were given their first lesson in voice modulation by Mr. Sandeep Mahajan, an accomplished actor and radio trainer, on February 9, 2015.

Mr. Mahajan first helped the students loosen up through a string of innovative and fun exercises. He then conducted voice training exercises and demonstrated the technique of speaking from the diaphragm.

“When you speak from the diaphragm, your voice resonates. It sounds deep and pleasing,” Mr Mahajan told the students. The students too realized it as they tried to follow Mr Mahajan.

This was not the only exercise that Mr Mahajan conducted. There were several other exercises aimed to help the students develop voice projection skills, which are essential to become a good radio professional.

An important aim of the workshop was to help students get rid of inhibitions and boost self-confidence. “The best communicators are those who are relaxed and natural,” Mr Mahajan said as he stressed the need to loosen up before any performance.

What the students liked most was the informal and unstructured format of the workshop. They soaked in the learning without stressing themselves.

Mr Mahajan, who has acted, scripted and directed plays and taken part in television serials conducts voice modulation and theatre workshops across India. The institutes where he has conducted such workshops include the Indian Film and Television Institute and the National School of Drama.
