A group of passionate first year B. Tech. Students (Abhinav Arya, Arun Kumar Tayal, Karan Amla, Rahul Biswash and Nikita Ahlawat) have made a low cost 3-D printer – AAKAR at GD Goenka University (GDGU) under the guidance of Dr. Sandeep Nagar (Assistant Professor, School of Engineering). 3-D printing is a cutting edge technology which is slated to be the future of manufacturing and rapid prototyping. Printing a product, rather than machining it from a material block, leads to many advantages like saving material, time, labour and thus reducing the overall cost. At present 3-D printer “AAKAR” is capable of printing small objects using PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) which is a bio- degradable plastic material.
Engineering students usually begin their project work in the 3rd or 4th year of their curriculum. However, GDGU has introduced a unique concept of project based learning through Inter-Disciplinary Projects in each semester starting from the very first year. This helps in giving a practical hand to their engineering studies.
Apart from the 3-D printer, students have also built robotic platforms which are capable of moving on a variety of terrains. Future plan of the research group includes making drones for agricultural and waste management as well as using them as sensor beds for scientific studies like monitoring water and air pollution. A variety of sensors will be developed in-house, to cater to the needs of projects related to these areas. GD Goenka University aims to be a leader in the area of research based learning to promote meaningful engineering education and enhance employability of engineering graduates.
