Industrial Visit to Welspun Pollybuttons Pvt. Ltd, Gurgaon

As a part of Academia-Industry interaction initiative, School of Engineering, GD Goenka University organized an Industrial Visit to the Welspun Pollybuttons Pvt. Ltd, Gurgaon for the second year B. Tech. students of Mechanical Engineering on September 18, 2014. A group of 43 students and faculty member Mr. Vikash Khatkar (Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering) visited the industry with an objective to acquaint the students with knowledge on various processes involved in manufacturing poly-buttons.

The visit started from the raw material wing of the industry where polyester resins in the form of raw materials are stored followed by the R&D section where raw material testing is done and its quality is checked as per ISO and BIS standards. The next itinerary was mixing section where raw material mixing is done with all other ingredients required for the mixture followed by the section where casting of the mixture prepared is done in the form of sheet and rods using centrifugal casting.

The team also visited several other sections like one for turning and cutting where casted sheets are converted into button shape using punching machines. Thereafter turning is done on the buttons after hardening to give some specific design. Finally, the logo is engraved on the buttons using laser cutting technique. The next destination was polishing section where all the buttons are polished using ceramic stones. After achieving the desired surface finish, the buttons are sent to sorting and packaging section where the entire button is sorted via manual as well as automatic processes to remove defective pieces if any and finally buttons are packed for the shipment.

It was indeed a wonderful visit where students got a good industry exposure through learning of various mechanical engineering processes like centrifugal casting, rod casting, hardening, drilling, turning and laser cutting. The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit and returned back to the campus with great learning experience.
