The School of Hospitality at G D Goenka University, Gurgaon in collaboration with Le Cordon Bleu celebrated World Tourism Day with gusto and enthusiasm. The chief guest at the event was Ms. Birgit Holm, General Manager, Dusit Devarana, New Delhi. The event was also attended by Mr. Eric Datta, Director, Digital Education, Le Cordon Bleu and Mr. Gaurav Sinha, Rooms Division Manager, Dusit Devarana.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Holm said, “Hospitality is not just a career, it’s a passion for life. It can really take you places. Tourism is a sum total of ethos, dedication and commercial viability of travel.”
Prof. (Dr.) Raj Singh, Vice Chancellor, G D Goenka University shared startling statistics to showcase the importance of tourism in job creation, livelihood generation and the impetus to the economy that tourism provides. He explained how this year’s motto ‘One Billion Tourists, One Billion Destinations’ was derived from the fact that in 2014 International tourist arrivals grew by 4.3 % to 1.133 billion. UNWTO forecasts a growth in international tourist arrivals of between 3% and 4% in 2015.
Earlier Prof. Y G Tharakan, Dean, School of Hospitality, in his welcome address inspired the students to be ready for the challenges of their chosen profession with skill and the right attitude.
As a run up to the event an essay writing competition and a collage making competition were organized for the students of all schools. The winners and participants were given certificates of excellence and merit.
The students learnt a lot from anecdotes and personal inputs from industry bigwigs. It was a day full of learning, fun and wonderful industry exposure.
