Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) (Biochemistry)

Programme Overview

Duration: 3 Years | Programme Code: 020217

B.Sc. (Hons.) Biochemistry programme endeavours to instill in students the knowledge and skill to investigate the building blocks of life, understand their interactions in living organisms, delve deeply into drug discovery and design and explore how modern molecular bioscience approaches can solve key challenges in Cell Biology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology and Genetics. A natural curiosity for science and proven understanding of Biology and Chemistry would foster a spirit in the students to learn how science can be exploited for the benefit of mankind.

Programme Educational Objectives:
  • The graduates will understand the principles and theories of Biochemistry so as to appreciate the inherent potentials of Biochemistry in the elucidation of life starting from the unicellular prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms to the more complex multicellular organisms.
  • The graduates will inculcate the spirit of discipline, sensitivity and an awareness of research trends in selected areas of Biochemistry.
  • The graduates will generate an appreciation of the importance of Biochemistry in industrial, economic, environmental, technological and social development.
Programme Outcomes: Upon completion of B.Sc. (Hons.) Biochemistry programme, the students will be able to:
  • acquire a broad foundation in Chemistry that stresses scientific reasoning and analytical problem solving with a molecular and biological perspective.
  • instill a sense of enthusiasm and appreciation of biochemical application in different contexts.
  • acquire up-to-date skills for immediate practice and disseminate the knowledge to solve potential industrial, biomedical and agro-based problems.
  • develop ability to think logically and clearly by articulation of thoughts, critical evaluation of experimental data and the scientific literature.
  • demonstrate skills in the application and interpretation of a range of appropriate laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • develop independent learning abilities and use integrated approaches to problem solving.
  • interpret the observations and develop critical analysis skills involving collection, evaluation and classification of data, deducing conclusion and formulating hypothesis.
  • develop a research culture in consonance with current trends in the biochemical world so as to inculcate broad scientific discipline in the students.
  • function in multi-disciplinary team and develop intellectual approach to the solution of complex life problems.
  • communicate effectively by oral, written, computational and graphical means.
