Laboratories and Workshops @ School of Engineering

“A Scientist in his Laboratory is not a mere Technician, he is also a child confronting natural phenomenon that impress him as though they are fairy tales”- Marie Curie

Madam Curie’s, this quotation accentuates the significance of a Laboratory in any Technical Education. At the core of learning is- assimilating knowledge through visually, acoustically and kinesthetically. A lab not only stimulates the senses of a learner but also gives him a free hand to manifest his creativity and imaginations. An ideal lab sets the right cord of learning and provides a conducive and favorable environment for learners to be motivated, stimulated towards absorbing knowledge and implementing it constructively through bearing a scientific attitude. It imbibes investigative & communicative skills, cognitive abilities through evolving critical, analytical and problem solving attitude, providing understanding of subject & attitudes and finally developing concepts. It also enhances interpersonal &intrapersonal skills by satiating curiosity, aggrandizing interest & objectivity, building confidence, understanding team work and team spirit. School of Engineering, GD Goenka University is revered to have an array of well-equipped laboratories conducive to facilitate impactful learning.

The lab mainly consists of the following: Impact strength apparatus for coarse aggregate Compression strength apparatus for coarse aggregate Motorized sieve shaker with 20mm and 30mm dia. sieve sets Oven Specific gravity apparatus Compression testing machine Universal testing machine Length and elongation gauge Jars, trays.

Surveying Lab

Surveying is one of the most important areas of Civil Engineering. All the construction projects start with the surveying of the site. The surveying lab at school of engineering has been established to make student well versed with the various basic and modern surveying equipment and various surveying techniques. Surveying Lab incorporate the exercises which involves the determination of bearings, direct and indirect measurement of vertical, horizontal and sloping distances, location of given points on the fields, preparation of contour of the given area, measurement of area and volume etc. This lab is fully equipped with various modern tools such as Total Stations, Electronic theodolites, Hand held GPSs, Vernier Theodolites, Auto levels, Prismatic compasses, Staffs, ranging rods, tapes, chains etc. The lab facilitates understanding of activities like working of Chain Survey, Compass Survey, Theodolite Survey, Trignometrical Leveling, Curve Surveying, and Contouring. Students learn to perform tachometry, triangulation surveying wherever situation demands. They also learn the usage of many modern instruments e.g. GPS, Total Station, and Stereoscope etc.

Data Structure and Algorithm Lab

The Data Structure and Algorithm lab operates with Windows 8 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 6 operating systems. The lab has 40 computers having Intel Pentium CPU G2030 @3Ghz Processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 bit operating System and one printer. Additional software includes Cadence Bundle 3, Octave, Turbo C, SQL Server, AUTO CAD, Graphic technology and various programming languages.

Object Oriented Programming Lab

“Object Oriented Programming through C++” Laboratory is mainly used by the second year B. Tech. students of computer science and engineering. It familiarizes the students with the basics of C++ which is a compulsory course. The Lab provides hands-on experience with the C++ language for developing complex programs by the students using Turbo C7 software, so that they are able to formulate computing problems and develop new and innovative technologies as novel solutions to address those problems. 30 students can perform the experiments at a time. Programs covered are based on the topics such as classes, objects, polymorphism, dynamic binding, inheritance etc. This lab is also used by the students to do their interdisciplinary projects with the help of software available. Lab is operational daily for seven hours and allows students in their free time to perform their work.

Digital Design Lab

Digital Design Lab exposes students to the fundamentals of digital electronics, logic gates, combinational and sequential circuits. Second year students of Electronics and Computer Engineering students use this lab for their practical work. This laboratory introduces the student to basics of Digital Electronics. Students are encouraged to design and verify various types of digital circuits. Emphasis is on designing of combinational and sequential circuits both. Practical demonstration of the theoretical concepts done in classrooms will enhance the understanding of the students. The experiments included in the curriculum cover majority of the digital circuits studied in theory like logic gates, multiplexers, de-multiplexers, encoders, decoders, adders, subtractors, counters, registers etc. A few value added experiments also have been added to enhance the skill and capability if students. The lab is well equipped with digital trainer kits, soldering kit, bread board, LED, Digital Electronic kits, CRO, function generator, and various types of digital ICs etc. It is spacious enough to accommodate 30 students at a time to perform experiments. This lab is also used by the students to do their interdisciplinary projects. It is operational daily for seven hours and allows students in free time to perform various experiments..
