Prof. (Dr.) Y G TharakanDean, Le Cordon Bleu School of Hospitality
Prof. (Dr.) Y G Tharakan began his career as a Chef with the Taj Mahal Hotel Resorts & Palaces, Mumbai, continued to serve for a decade in Sultanate of Oman looking after the Muscat Palace Properties where he was fortunate enough to cater a number of Kings, Princes of Kingdoms and National Heads of various countries.
With immense experience and exposure, Prof. (Dr.) Y G Tharakan joined with the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration, Manipal, Karnataka in the year 1991 and spear headed the development of the institute through curriculum development, student training and infrastructure development and brought the institute to a national prominence within a matter of a decade.
At Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration he served as the Head of the Department of Food and Beverage Management Food and Beverage Production, and later as Programme Director ofMasters Programme & Allied Hospitality Studies, Manipal University, and has been actively involved with the Hotel and Catering industry, Research and Education for the past 38 years
He has been a member of the Expert committee of AICTE and UGC for assessing and evaluating various catering institutions, Curriculum Development Committees of University of Mangalore, University of Bangalore and Dr. MGR Educational Research Institute University, Chennai.
Prof. (Dr.) Y G Tharakan was awarded the Fellowship of the prestigious Institute of Hospitality, UK (FIH) in the year 2001 and is a member of the Royal Society of Health, (MRSH) UK. He is also the recipient of the International Certifications “Certified Hospitality Educator” (CHE) and “Certified Hotel Administrator” (CHA) of the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Prof. (Dr.) Y G Tharakan has triple Masters in Marketing, Tourism Administration, Philosophy and a Doctoral Degree in Hospitality and Tourism.
He has published several articles in various National and International journals and has visited countries like Korea, Switzerland, UK, USA, Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia for invited talks and presenting research papers.He is also in the editorialboard of International Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Systems (IJHTS) and International Journal of Social Sciences (TIJOSS).
He has initiated several Programmes like World Tourism Day, World Bread Day, International Chef Day, Formal Dinner etc. as well as various Fests, Symposiums and International Conferences at the Welcomgroup Graduate School, Manipal University.
Prof. (Dr.) Y G Tharakan has also authored a book titled “A Guide to Food and Beverage – Made Appetizing with Questions and Answers” published by TATA Mac Graw - Hill, London, which is quite popular among the students and professionals of Hospitality Industry.
He was also involved in student’s outreach Programme of Sustainable Tourism through Community development at Kempthur village, in Udupi District.
Recently, he was awarded the “Life time Achievement award” from the Indian Hospitality Congress for his contribution to Hospitality and Tourism education in India.
