The students of MBA Programme at GD Goenka University, visited the Maruti Suzuki plant on May 9, 2014 guided by Dr. P. K. Goel and Dr. Tanuja Kaushik. Maruti Suzuki is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in India. It is a subsidiary of the Japanese Company Suzuki. The plant at old Palam road manufactures approximately 350-400 cars daily. The operations at the Maruti Suzuki follow hosts of strategies for optimum utilization of time and resources.

The facility layout at Maruti is combination of both product as well as process layout. The quality checks are the value added inspections as a part of lean operations. Maruti attaches a great deal of importance to improving its production capabilities and has 85% automation at its Gurgaon plant with mechanical robot systems to perform various functions.

The Maruti plant visit was extremely enriching as the students could relate the theoretical concepts such as JIT, TQM, SIX SIGMA, MUDA etc learnt in the classroom with the actual practice at the plant. The students were impressed seeing the plant and the perfection of the production process, product design, facility layout, inventory control and other operations management processes.

At the end, students were given a presentation which was followed by query session. Overall, the visit was very successful and educative. It enlightened the students on how such large scale plant embodying the world class manufacturing practices functions.
