We the students of MBA were taken to Fresh and Health Enterprise Ltd (FHEL) on 17th October 2013, to learn about their Supply Chain Operations. We were accompanied by Mrs.Kakoli Sen, Mrs.Tanuja Kaushik and Dr. P. K. Goel, Dean, School of Management.

FHEL has a world class infrastructural facility for procurement and storage of perishable items, primarily apples and pears. We got an opportunity to understand how items from Srinagar are transported to Delhi in safest conditions and how they are controlled. We also learnt how these items are separated, diversified, stored and finally supplied to the customers.

Mr. Naresh Java, CEO of FHEL explained to us how the organization was started with limited capital, how all the functions and organizational structure was made, how the choice of technology was made, challenges faced by them etc.

Key features of FHEL as explained to us were as follows:-

  • Sorting and grading from trucks and sorting using cameras conveyer belts for standardization.
  • Controlled Atmosphere technology which involved controlling the temperature, humidity etc. to delay the ripening of products.

It was a great learning experience of how perishable items move from farm to fork.
