G D Goenka University, one of the leading institutions of higher education in the country , committed to provide unique learning opportunities along with modern praxis, organized an orientation programme for the freshmen batch of 2015.

The orientation programme took place from 17-19 August 2015 for all departments at the university campus which included School of Architecture and Planning, School of Communication, School of Education, School of Engineering, School of Fashion and Design, School of Hospitality, School of Humanities, School of Law and School of Management. The objective of the programme was to acquaint the parents and the students with not just the academics or the rules and regulations of the university but also to encourage parental participation in the overall success of their enrolled pupils. The programme also acts as a platform of convergence amongst the student body, the faculty, the industry and the University.

The three-day programme kicked off with the registration process, document verification and interaction of parents with Prof. (Dr.) Raj Singh, the honorable Vice chancellor of G D Goenka University. The salient features of the university were exhibited and the queries of the parents were addressed patiently by the Vice Chancellor during the interaction. He also spoke about the inter-disciplinary nature of the teaching methodology and learning process at G D Goenka University and highlighted the University’s motto to empower students with various skills, which would make them employable in the global market.

Dr. Singh in his interaction with the students extended a very warm welcome to them. He enlightened them about the changing paradigms of learning and motivated the students to be curious and engaged in order to achieve their goals. He advised the students to be farsighted and look towards the latest technological advancements in the future.

During those three days, the students were briefed about the Credit requirements for their respective courses, the University Regulations & Examination system, Discipline and Anti Ragging Measures by Prof. (Dr.) Deependra Kumar Jha, the Dean of Academics, G D Goenka University and Ms. Suneet Soni, the Controller of Examination, G D Goenka University. The new entrants were offered the university handbook which gave basic information about college activities, guidelines, tips to facilitate their understanding of the university system.

As G D Goenka University believes in doing things differently, creatively and innovatively, it has introduced a wide range of differentiators designed to drive significant value to students. These GDGU differentiators were shared with the students by Prof. (Dr.) Pradeep Kumar Goel, Dean School of Management, G. D. Goenka University and Prof. (Dr.) Kakoli Sen, Associate Dean, School of Humanities and Social Science, G D Goenka University. In the session on GDGU differentiators, they shared about the flexibility in the course plan, different competency builders, knowledge augmenters, amalgamators and minor courses introduced by the university. They gave an insight into providing practical exposure to students and imbibe the quality of “learning by doing”, an inter-disciplinary learning approach and Industry interface from time to time.

The pyramid of student activities organized from time to time in G D Goenka University were shared by Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Gupta, Dean School of Fashion and Design and the Chair of Board of Student Activities. He showcased the various recreational activities including the sports activity society, the Academic society and CSR activities at GDGU. The new batch re-visited the major events of last year including Fresher’s party, CSR activity, Diwali Mela, Street play and the art and literature fest and also the annual university fest Acceleron.

In the respective schools, the Deans of the respective schools introduced the students to their respective Heads of Departments, members of the faculty and gave them an overview of the curriculum. Here too, each school had a different emphasis, yet adhering to the overall ethos and principles of G D Goenka University. They shared with the students that our University benchmarks its systems and facilities to compete with the best in the world. The Schools also gave the students a glimpse of GDGU’s class experience. The respective schools also organized various ice breaking sessions with fun activities to let the freshers feel at ease. Every school came up with interesting activities suited to the aptitude and interests of young freshmen ushered in their department.

In different schools, panel discussions by eminent personalities from academia and industry were organized to stimulate the minds of the new entrants. In these panel discussions, emerging trends in the industry and other contemporary issues were discussed and debated.

Another commendable aspect of the Orientation Programme were the hardworking and hospitable student volunteers who not only managed the help desks efficiently but also helped in the smooth streamlining of the entire programme. The third day of the orientation programme was concluded with a talent hunt competition in which the budding talents of students outshined brilliantly through dance, music and dramatics.

The students were exhilarated and quite enthusiastic about starting their academic journey in an institution that focuses on the holistic development of each student enrolled. Be it academics or extra-curricular activities, the motto is to develop students into socially conscious citizens with a spirit of innovation and creativity, confidently striving towards the pursuit of excellence.
