On 14th March 2016, Prof. LIU Yun-Hui from The Chinese University of Hong Kong visited the GD Goenka University’s School of Engineering.
Prof. Liu is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering and also Director of CUHK T Stone Robotics Institute. The T Stone institute is working towards providing robotic and automation solution for Medical and Industrial fields in Hong Kong.
It was Prof. Liu’s first visit to India. He visited all the engineering labs and was quite impressed with the equipment and the projects developed by the students. He mentioned that in Hong Kong, projects are undertaken only in the final year of engineering. He really liked the 3-D printer, Voice Activated Home Automation, Vibrating Table cum Apparatus for Relative Density of Soil and LED bulbs at GDGU.
He also interacted with some engineering students and discussed about the work he is involved in. The students told him about the projects they are making this semester and got his inputs on the same. He showed videos of robots they have built for doing surgeries in operation theatres and robots doing material handling in large industrial plants. He told that due to more people being involved in high skilled jobs, there is a shortage of low skilled labor in Hong Kong which has resulted in really high wages of approximately 300US$ a day for cleaners and house painters. So industries have been approaching them to build robots for such jobs. It was an interactive session with the students and the students also gained some project ideas from his presentation.
In a meeting with Prof. (Dr.) D. K. Jha, Dean, School of Engineering, Prof. Liu also talked about the possibilities of collaboration between GD Goenka University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He showed interest in providing summer internship opportunities for GDGU engineering students at his institute during summer and also invited team from GD Goenka University to visit the University in Hong Kong.
