SOHSS Students Attend Panel Discussion on Empowerment of Women

Students of BA (Hons) Psychology and BA (Hons) Economics went for a Panel Discussion on Role of Law-Women Security, Equality and Empowerment to Fortis Hospital, Gurgaon. Women Empowerment Safety and Security (WESS) organised a panel discussion on Thursday, 05 February 2015 at Fortis Hospital Meditorium, Gurgaon through the patronage of Shri Navdeep Singh Virk, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Gurgaon. WESS is a NGO registered under the Haryana Registration and Regulation of Societies Act, 2012, formed by 14 independent entrepreneurial and professional women with the aim of creating awareness amongst women about their safety and security, keeping in view the present scenario.

WESS stated their goal as ‘HUMARI HIMMAT HUMARI SHAKTI’. They aim to dissolve gender inequality and contribute to the society.WESS gave a warm welcome to all the participants and audience followed by their registrations.

Three major topics for the discussion were ‘Accused can be a Victim’, ‘Proposal to amend The Anti-Rape Act’ and ‘The Role of Police and Women Safety’.

The eminent panellist from different areas were, Vice Chairperson Women Commission- Mrs Suman Dhaiya, Head of Security – Major Avtar Singh, Ex Judge Haryana (Adr.) Supreme Court Of India -Mr. D K Sharma, Haryana News TV anchor – Ms.Navjot Sindhu, FIL India Head Security  – Mr Balwant Singh Atwal and Advocate Nikhil Bahri – Practicing Lawyer Delhi Court.

The speakers presented on different issues which they were dealing in day to day situations keeping in mind the safety and security of women. They spoke on topics like Safety of Women during the Transit , One Touch Emergency Response App for cellphones , Anti Rape Act 2013 -(376)-Genesis of law,Sexual Harassment at Work Place ACT – 2013- Genesis of law, Domestic Dowry Act – (498) Genesis of Law, Role of Police for Women Safety.

After Indian women took decades fighting the society to come out of the shelters and beginning to get independent, the struggle to walk beside men is still a reality! Though sexual harassment of women at work place Act 2014 , came as a milestone in regard but it is still being held with a serious criticism due to it possible lethal usage against men.

Finally there was an intense and passionate panel discussion, panellist discussing issues and role of law in women safety, media and MNCs defining their own roles when it comes to safety, there were legal issues and acts which were highlighted and the panellists discussed about different helplines and remedies launched to take care for the safety of women.

The event was indeed a great learning experience for the students of School of Humanities and Social Science.
