Every year hundreds of countries come together to celebrate Earth Day on April 22. As city becomes the preferable choice of residence for the major section of the population, the bleak reality of climate changes is increasingly becoming clear. This year the global theme of earth day is “Green Cities”. To be a part of this global theme, we thought of contributing in some way to make this world a better place to live. In this context, School of Engineering, GD Goenka University (GDGU) invited undergraduate students to come forward with their ideas in the field of Renewable Energy Generation and/or Waste Management in a locality of their choice based on the principles of 3 R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle. Under the aegis of Bio Sciences and Nanotechnology Research Group (BSNR) of School of Engineering organized an “Open Ideas Competition on Green and Clean Environment”. This was a team event: two members per team. Ten teams, including external University/Institutes, registered made it to the final round of the competition held on 2nd May 2014 in GD Goenka University campus.

It was nice to see young minds thinking hard in this regard and coming up with their suggestions and ideas. As a first step, the teams proposed their idea. On 2nd May, 2014, each team presented their proposals in a 10 minute PPT presentation. The teams were judged on the basis of their project’s impact on environment, uniqueness of the idea, cost efficiency and practical viability of the project and their presentation style. Dr. Shalini Bhaskar Bajaj (Associate Professor, School of Engineering, GDGU), Dr. Priyanka Sharma (Assistant Professors, School of Engineering, GDGU) and Anindita Roy Chowdhury (Assistant Professor, School of Engineering, GDGU) were the members of the jury.

Mahadevan B. Iyer and Siddharth Sudhakar from Appejay Stya University were declared the winners of the event. Arun K. Tayal and Inderjeet Singh of G D Goenka University won the second prize whereas, Vaibhav Malik and Satyam Singh of G D Goenka University were the third prize winners. Trophies and certificates were given over to all the winners. Shreya Prakash and Devanshu Chawla were the student coordinators of the Event. On completion of the presentations, Luis Edivaldo (an international student from Republic of Angola at GDGU) played an environment based music on his guitar. The event was concluded by the Event Coordinator, Anindita Roy Chowdhury with a hope to see a more sustainable green and clean future through the implementation of such proposals put forward by our younger generation.
