School of Engineering, GD Goenka University organized an industrial visit to the waste to energy plant of Timarpur Okhla Waste Management Company Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi on 2nd April, 2014 for the 1st year students of B.Tech Civil Engineering.
A total of 37 students accompanied by two faculty members – Mr. Mandeep Narula and Mr. Vikas Khatkar visited the plant. The objective of the visit was to make the undergraduate students familiar with the process involved in waste to electricity production and its numerous benefits related to the environment, climate and recycling of resources.
Timarpur Okhla Waste to Energy facility (which is a 100% subsidiary of Jindal ITF Urban Infrastructure Ltd) is India’s first large scale waste to energy 16 MW power project aiming to dispose and process one-third of Delhi’s Municipal Solid Waste and generates a much needed clean renewable energy. This facility aims for a sustainable solution taking municipal solid waste through an environment friendly combustion process to generate clean and renewable energy.
On reaching the plant, students were taken for a high tea where they interacted with different people involved in this project. The students were then taken to a Seminar Hall where the site engineer addressed the students and shared the profile of the company. He then briefed the students about the complete process involved in waste to energy production starting from the municipal waste being delivered to the Timarpur Okhla plant till steam generation which drives the turbine and generates electricity. He also explained the benefits like reduced dependency on fossil fuels which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, reduced risk of ground water contamination, reduced need for landfills, recycling and re-use of resources – metals, ashes etc.
Students then visited the municipal solid waste pit which is maintained under negative pressure to prevent bad smell. Students were then taken to the Control Room of the plant where the combustion process is controlled using PLC’s and the temperature inside furnace is monitored continuously which is maintained at a minimum of 850Ã‚Â° C. Induced draft fan and primary/secondary fan for removing the flue gas from boiler and helping in combustion process are also monitored in control room.
Furnace monitoring cameras and automatic alarms which are installed to monitor the furnace temperature and to ensure complete combustion were shown to the students. Different emission measuring instruments for measuring gasses like CO2, HCI, NO, NOx, O2, SOx were also demonstrated. At the end, students were shown the instruments where all gases are collected; filtered and cleaned before ‘hot air’ is emitted into the atmosphere.
The industrial visit to Timarpur Okhla Waste Management Plant was very informative and an enriching experience for the students at such an early stage of their engineering programme.
