Visit of Engineering Students to an Orphanage – Deepashram

Saturday, 22nd March: Students of School of Engineering, GD Goenka University visited an orphanage in Gurgaon. Deepashram which is home for physically and mentally challenged children. Five student volunteers from B.Tech 1st year – Riyaz Ali, Tanuj Jindal, Sidharth Saini, Nitish Bhardwaj and Utsav Agrawal accompanied by faculty coordinator Mr. Mandeep Narula visited the place.

Deepashram was established on November 1994 as a society with the State Government, India. At present, 42 disabled and mentally challenged children between 11-30 years of age are living in Deepashram which is run by Society of Missionary Brothers of Charity Contemplative of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

The team reached the orphanage at around 3:30 PM. The children of Deepashram were very pleasantly excited to receive the members. The student volunteers greeted them with great enthusiasm. There was huge smile on the faces of orphanage children and they were very happy to engage with them. The team members also met the caretaker of Deepashram who was busy in helping the children to do various activities. They distributed snacks and sweets to the children.

The student volunteers interacted with the disabled and mentally challenged children and helped them with their daily exercise. They also engaged them in various sports activities like cricket, football and badminton. All the children looked so excited and joyful. On this occasion, faculty coordinator Mr. Mandeep Narula handed over the money (Draft) which was collected by the student volunteers from the students and staff of the School of Engineering for this noble cause to the caretaker of Deepashram. In addition, new cloths (T-shirts) were also donated for to the children.

The team spent a little over three hours with the children of Deepashram before saying goodbye to them. It was indeed very satisfying experience for the students as they could bring smiles on children’s faces however for a brief period. They realized that one must contribute and understand his/her social responsibilities towards society.
