With an objective of giving the young minds a platform to understand and learn the basics of data science using ‘R’ as a computing tool, School of Engineering, G D Goenka University organized a workshop entitled ‘Data Analysis using R’ on March 19-20, 2015. Data science is all about transforming data into business using mathematics and algorithms. ‘R’ is one of the most commonly used languages among data scientist.

Resource person of the workshop Dr. Athar Ali Khan, a professor in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, AMU Aligarh, is a renowned name in the field of data analysis with development of more than thirty applications (computer packages) to his credit. He has been invited for a number of workshops and seminars across the country.

On day 1, Professor Khan started the session with an introduction to R programming, its comparison with other languages and basics matrix and graphical operations. After lunch break, he discussed various data analysis tools and explained the concepts related to t-test and paired t-test. On day 2, he discussed analysis of variance techniques, regression models, analysis of categorical data, survival analysis and simulation using R programming. At the end, a short interactive session was offered by Dr. Nisha Arora (Faculty of Mathematics at GD Goenka University) who discussed various online tools, web applets, other resources to facilitate knowledge in statistics as well as R programming. She also mentioned interactive ways to learn R using Data Camp and other open sources.

The workshop received an overwhelming response from students, faculty members and researcher scholars. A total of 53-participants registered for the workshop from various institutions in NCR. Participants ranging from different fields like engineering, management, pure & applied mathematics, and optometry created a truly diverse learning environment during the workshop. The workshop was much appreciated by one and all.
