IKS 2022

The domain of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) holds the scope for interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and even transdisciplinary exchange. These knowledge systems are rooted in the cultural experiences of a community as a result of its constant interaction with its ecosystem. Traditionally, knowledge has been constituted, stored and maintained in the framework of the oral culture. According to Bhartrhari, knowledge is constituted in our inner self. There is the antarjftata, constituted by the input of the senses (indriyas), processed by the mind {mana) and the intellect (buddhi), and finally constituted knowledge exists as our transformed, alert self, citta. the Indian mind has not relied completely on mind and senses and has accorded the central role in knowledge formation to meditation and deep reflection, chintana and manan. Indian disciplinary formations include fields as diverse as philosophy, architecture, grammar, mathematics, astronomy,
metrics, sociology (dharma- Ustra), economy and polity (arthas'a'stra), ethics (nftis'astra), geography, logic, military science, weaponry, agriculture, mining, trade and commerce, metallurgy, mining, shipbuilding, medicine, poetics, biology and veterinary science. In each of these a continuous and cumulative series of texts continues to be available in spite of widespread loss and historically recorded destruction. The structure of traditional knowledge, its delivery system, its widespread application and utilization, and ultimately the ways of integrating this knowledge system into higher education are some of the new areas of understanding that this conference will address.

The Indian knowledge system includes both ancient and modern systems of knowledge that are practiced and applied on a regular basis in almost every aspect of human life. When we explore the domain of knowledge further, we realise that it is after all a confluence of three key ideas i.e. Darsana or the point of view which leads to Jnana or development of knowledge from a specific perspective which then progresses to organization and systematization of knowledge for the purpose of reflection and pedagogy then it is called Vidya or the discipline. The knowledge is thereby categorized into Para Vidya and Apara Vidya (Mundakopanishad) and furthermore the distinction is carried out to establish the streams of Jnana and Vijnana wherein the latter explores the tangible, and observable phenomenon of the perceptible world while the former engages with the experiential facts. Both the experiential knowledge and knowledge about the observable phenomenon require preparation and exploration of either the inner self or the outer world. It is on the basis of this distinct classification; we are able to acquire greater understanding about the self and beyond.

Like any traditional form of knowledge, the Indian Knowledge System has been preserved in the collective consciousness of the people. Through the means of a robust oral culture and its myriad interpretations that have been recorded in the ancient texts, the Indian Knowledge System has managed to flourish over centuries. However, it is the contemporary times of unbridled development that call for an integration of this traditional knowledge with modern practices of education. This International Conference intends to take the tradition of Tarka forward in order to achieve an enhanced understanding of the ways and means in which Indian Knowledge Systems may be incorporated into the curriculum and pedagogy of the higher education in India.
