Report on Community Service Program atAbhaypur Village in collaboration withNavjyoti Foundation India, Sohna Road, Gurugram(from 18th February, 2019)
Schoolof Education, GD Goenka Universityorganized a community service program for the student-teachers of semester IV of B.Ed. Program. This program is part of their curriculum under the course title‘Working with Society’.The course requires them to directly interact with society and get hands-onexperience. Keeping this in view, School of Education collaborated with an NGO, Navjyoti India Foundation. The NGOis a not-for-profit society registered on January 5, 1988 by 16 serving police officers and conceived by Dr. KiranBedi, the first woman IPS Officer and her team. One of the objectives of setting up this NGO is to prevent crime through welfare policing.
The NGO, Navjyoti India Foundation is run by Ms.ChandniBedi who spearheads all the programs including Child Education, Skills for Youth, Women Empowerment, Community Development, Environment Protection and a model program on de-addiction. The student-teachers selected child education and women Empowerment as the two areas for under taking community service. However they also undertook some activities focusing on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and BetiBachaoBetiPadhao. All these activities were carries out at a nearby village, Abhaypur which was identified by Navjyoti Foundation since all such developmental activities there are carried out by the Foundation.
During this week-long community service program which started from 18th February, 2019 student-teachers undertook a large number of activities to become aware of the common issues and challenges faced by people in the area. Mr. Somdutt Bhardwaj and Mrs. PriyankaKakde from Navjyoti India Foundation apprised the students about the organization and functioning of the NGO. They further elaborated on the duties of all the workers and services provided to the under-privileged women and children of the nearby rural areas.
The objectives of the community service programme were in line with the course objectives :
The student-teachers undertook various kinds of activities but they selected two specific areas related to education of women and children of the area.The following activities were organized:
All the above activities were carried out to sensitize the rural people about the importance of education of girls, empowerment of women and relation of health and hygiene with cleanliness.
The student-teachers thanked Ms.ChandniBedi for all her support during the program and all the other officials of the NGO for this wonderful learning. They expressed their sincere gratitude to the Dean, School of Education for having created this opportunity for the students where they got exposure to the real-life situation and challenges of the rural people.
