GD Goenka University celebrated its annual sports meet named ‘Sportopia 2017’ on January 27 and 28. The event begun with an inaugural group dance performance in which the Students of School of Education showed their moves and cheered up the players. Mr Kuldeep Malik, Chief Coach of Indian Women Wrestling team, and the man behind the Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, was the Guest of Honour. Mr Malik, during his inaugural address, asked the students to respect their opponents. Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr Deependra Kumar Jha, administered the oath of sportsmanship to the players while Dr P.K. Goel, Chairman Sportopia Organising Committee, delivered the welcome address. There were over 1,500 participants from nearly 50 Universities, colleges and institutes of Delhi/NCR, Haryana, and other neighboring states. The two-day event witnessed teams fighting for titles in ten sports — cricket, kabaddi, table tennis, volleyball, badminton, squash, lawn tennis, basketball, kho-kho and football. Some of the colleges and universities that participated in the event were Lady Shri Ram College, Shiv Nadar University, Amity University, Galgotia University, Hansraj College, Rajasthan University, NorthCap University, K R Mangalam University and Apeejay Stya University. Food stalls served mouthwatering snacks like Dim-Sums, burgers and sandwiches while on the other side, there were food trucks selling snacks, ice- creams and shakes. All the students, faculties and other staff wearing sports outfits enjoyed the interesting sports matches with great enthusiasm.
