School of Engineering, G. D. Goenka University organised an educational trip to Minda Furukawa Electric Pvt. Ltd. based at Bawal, Rewari, Haryana on 28th March, 2018. A group of 39 students of 2nd& 3rd year B. Tech (Mechanical & Chemical Engineering) visited this facility along with faculty member Mr. Prashant G.K (Assistant Professor).
Minda Furukawa Electric Pvt. Ltd. (MFE) is a Joint Venture between the Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group of India and Furukawa Electric of Japan. The Joint Venture is a 51:49 partnership with Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group holding 51% and Furukawa Electric holding 49%. The company develops and produces the entire range of wiring harness for four wheelers for its customers, and components related to wiring harness e.g. couplers, terminals, relay boxes, junction boxes, and Steering Roll Connectors used for the airbag systems etc.
The students were welcomed in the presentation hall, where they were given a broad overview of the history of the Minda Furukawa Pvt. Ltd. and its various plants, customers and their requirements, production and manufacturing plans, and the profit share in the past few years. The students were divided in two groups. They were given a brief introduction of the instruments being used, their production time for each component, and the intermediate steps until the development of the end product.They also got to see the bar controlled flexible storage system with Poka-Yoke for FIFO, Swiss and Japanese automatic cutting, stripping and crimping machines, World class process control following Japanese technology of Kanban, Special final assembly jigs (case jig/stopper jig, etc.) and final assembly board, Clamp & clips direction and dimension checking as per vehicle orientation, Double stage circuit checking equipment including air leakage testing, Bar code scanning at final inspection & packaging to ensure FIFO of FG & correct part in correct bin, Junction boxes applicable for passenger cars, Multi tape type SRC(patented technology), Japanese assembly line, Design Software: For Customer Interface, Development Software: For Process Development, Pneumatic Test Rigs, Resistance Welding, Airbag Circuits Cut, Crimp Special Purpose Equipment, PC Guidance System for Sub Assemblies, Vision, Auto Grease Injection, Torque Tightening Equipment, Applicator Design and Development, Jigs and Fixture, Checkers Design and Development, and many more. They were briefed about all the above mentioned instruments. Altogether, they were introduced with the production and development stages of the entire range of wiring harness for four wheelers and components related to wiring harness, electronics and mechanics.
This visit was planned in order to enhance the knowledge of various equipment’s used in the domain of manufacturing, production, supply chain management, engineering design and electronics and mechanics. The interaction with the technical staffs, also enlightened the students about the concepts and fundamentals for production processes. After the visit, the students were directly taken to the huge mess hall for a delicious, healthy and nutritious lunch. The visit was found to be extremely useful for students to get the practical knowledge and generate curiosity about the subject.
