The School of Humanities and Social Science (SoHSS) along with the KISS (Knowledge, Intersectionality, Sensitisation and Solidarity) Project organised a cultural event of poetry, play, reading, film-screening and discussion to celebrate the International Women’s Day on 8 March 2016.The event was addressed by Prof KakoliSen, Dean,SoHSS where she spoke on the various rolesplayed by women both at home and world. She asked everyone to pay attention to several fields where women proved themselves competent, successful and talented. The programme had poetry recitations by both students and faculty. Poulomi Bose, faculty of SoHSS along with a few students like Amandeep and Rohini recited their own compositions which were highly appreciated by all. Annapurna, a first year student of English Honours shared her experience as a girl and what it is to feel like a woman reader and writer. A short film, “Desdemona” created by students for an inter-disciplinary course called “Shakespearewallah” under the guidance of the course-instructor Gourab Ghosh was also screened. The film was a feminist reading of Shakespeare’s Othello.

A short skit titled, “For Half the Sky, For Half the Earth” was enacted by the second year students of Psychology Honours: Hugo, Sneha, Anjali, Kamana and Nandita to sensitise the audience on sexual harassment of women at workplace and the laws that protect women against it. The programme concluded with the screening of a collage of posters on the women’s movement in India and adiscussion moderated by Minakshi Biswas and Gourab Ghosh, faculty of SoHSS to bring forth the issues, challenges and strategies to build a rock-solid unity for the women’s movement.

The programme was attended by Prof Raj Singh, Honourable Vice-Chancellor and Ms SuneetSoni, Controller of Examinations, GDGU.
