School of Engineering, G.D. Goenka University organized an industrial visit for third year students of B.Tech,Computer Science and Engineering to HUAWEI Telecommunication Private Ltd, Gurugram on 6th April, 2017. HUAWEI is a Chinese multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company. Its headquarter is located in Shenzhen, Guangdong. The business areas of HUAWEI include the establishment of IT solutions, leading in networking and expansion in devices. The company has its branches spread over 150 countries.

The industrial visit started with a presentation, briefing the students about the latest telecommunication statistics, the various information and communication technologies currently in use and the certified training courses offered at HUAWEI telecommunications. The industry offers courses in five different domains: (1) Wireless Fundamentals (2G, 3G & 4G ).(2) Transmission Fundamentals. (3) Datacom Fundamentals (Routers, switches, Security & Firewall).(4) Core Network Fundamentals.(5) Cloud Computing. The course content is expected to be completed in 150 working hrs in the duration of about 4 Months. The Industrial experience of 2 Months is included as an essential part of training apart from the course content.

Furthermore, the presentation was focused on ICT (Information Communication Technology) industry. The essence and presence of ubiquitous communication coupled with digital flood was explained in detail. The evolution of telecommunication was discussed, starting right from down the timeline when ‘monochrome sets’ and ‘pagers’ were used for calling and messaging separately. The game changing endorsement of ‘Unified Licencing System’ by Government of India which allowed calling and messaging via the same phone was explained. The students understood the various ways to access the internet using the FBB (Fixed Broadband) and MBB (Mobile Broadband) and the subtle difference in the two. Students were awed knowing that 2 billion mobile users thrive. The profit arithmetic of the mobile network operators was explained with the usage value in India.

The generations of mobile networks starting from 0G, 1G, 2G (1800 MHz), 3G (2100 MHz) and 4G& LTE (2300 MHz) with the two parallel technologies of CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile) were explained. The emergence of VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) was talked about. The moving forward trend of ICT industry was discussed in three basic patterns; from voice to data, from people to machines & from CT to ICT. The evolution of digital society was brought into light, focusing on the paradigm shift from voice to data. The value chain system was explained via various levels referring to the subscriber and mobile network operators. The students were demonstrated about how the market value of oneself can be increased by enhancing the technical skills. Various career options available in ICT industries were discussed in detail.

The interactive presentation session was followed by the lab visit. Lab visit was organised in small groups. The group size was 12 students. This provided an opportunity to each student to get involved in the lab session. The well established lab includes various data communication modules such as HUAWEI Cloud Solution console, BTS (Base Trans-receiver Station), LMS (Live Management System) for transmission networks were demonstrated. The lab work was demonstrated by one of the learned and skilful instructor. During the visit, the students witnessed the HUAWEI cloud environment setup to provide cloud computing solutions and the various disk array, role of L2 and L3 switches, routers, console cable, routing paths, simulator, switching parts, carriers, baseband unit, BTS, LMS, BTS to BSC transmission, optical transport network used in signal transmission. The visit was quite informative for the students as they were able to understand and correlate their theoretical knowledge with recent application trends and career options available in ICT industry. Industrial/research lab visits, guest lectures, hands-on workshops and project based learning are some of the highlights of different programs offered at GD Goenka School of Engineering.
