Spoken Tutorial Exam Conducted By IIT Bombay

IIT-Bombay had launched the Spoken Tutorial Project at GD Goenka University campus to enable its students to access IT literacy in January 2014. On 12th and 14th May 2014, online tests were conducted on programming language ‘C++’, under this initiative. A total 60 out of 85 undergraduate (B. Tech.) students from School of Engineering, GD Goenka University cleared the test and were certified by Spoken Tutorial, IIT- B.

Spoken Tutorial is an initiative by the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) launched by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD), Government of India and is being developed by IIT Bombay.

Principal Investigator, Prof. Kannan Moudgalya spearheads the project at IIT Bombay to promote IT literacy, improve employment and to help bridge the digital divide. Through this he has already trained many students across many schools and colleges on FOSS (Free Open Source Software) technologies through workshops in the last few years, all over the country. It is an audio-visual tutorial tool that helps students learn and use Open Source Software (OSS). The working of the software is explained by experts, by its demonstrations on the screen aided by running commentary. A movie of both these audio and video activities is made by screencast software, and this movie is called as Spoken Tutorial. It captures each and every step required to elaborate an activity and understanding the software. This makes it a comprehensive solution to document and explain software or any computer-based activity.

Certificates were generated and distributed to the students who successfully cleared the test. Faculty Members Ms. Shipra Kataria and Ms. Shweta Mongia (Assistant Professors, School of Engineering) coordinated the entire process. Event like this is a regular feature of teaching learning process at GD Goenka University.
