The students of B.Tech Civil Engineering and B.Sc. Chemistry (Hons.) from School of Engineering, GD Goenka University, went on an industrial visit to Central Water Commission, Govt. of India, near Kalindi Bhawan, Qutub Institutional Area, New Delhi on 5th April 2017.



Central Water Commission (CWC) is a premier technical organization in the country in the field of water resources since 1945. The Commission is charged with the general responsibilities of initiating, coordinating and furthering, in consultation with the State Governments concerned, schemes for control, conservation and utilization of water resources throughout the country, for the purpose of Flood Control, Irrigation, Navigation, Drinking Water Supply and Hydro Power Development.



The objective of the visit was to provide students an insight regarding internal working of the organization which included the construction and working of dams on the Indian rivers, the in habitation and vegetation of areas around rivers, flood forecasting, solving water disputes of different states etc. along with providing an opportunity to gain hands-on- experience in testing different parameters affecting water quality, safety and usability.



The visit started with the museum which has miniatures of various dams, irrigation techniques, and hydraulic tunnels. These provided the students an understanding of water resources in India, Dam projects, their working, irrigation, flood control, flood forecasting design and warning systems, designs of hydraulic tunnels and many more.



Finally, the students visited the Level-II National Water Testing Laboratory and gained understanding and hands-on-experience of the functioning of R&D section regarding testing of several parameters like pH, TDS, bacteriological parameters, O2 amount etc. It was pleasure for the students to know the techniques which made them aware them and socially responsible person. The visit was very useful for the students as they could relate their theoretical knowledge with the practical exposure which they have gained after visiting this organization. It was a good learning experience for the students.
