Courses available
Three different types of courses are available depending on the qualifications of the candidate. Some of these courses are offered by fashion colleges in Delhi, while others by fashion institutes of repute. These courses include:
Certificate courses in fashion designing: These are generally done after passing the 10th standard and they are of 1-year duration.
Diploma courses: These courses include obtaining a diploma in either fashion designing or fashion communication. Each has a duration of 1 year respectively and admission to these can only be sought after clearing the 12th board exams.
Degree courses: These are undergraduate courses that require candidates to clear their class 12-board exams. They are of a duration of 3 to 4 years and offered by fashion colleges in Delhi. Candidates have the option of opting for postgraduate courses after completing the undergraduate courses. The undergraduate courses in fashion designing include:
Bachelor of design, a 4year course period
BSc in fashion designing, a 3-year course
Bachelor of design, a 4-year course in fashion communication
The available postgraduate courses include Masters of Design either in fashion design or fashion communication. Each of these courses is of a duration of 2 years.
Fashion design can be divided into three distinct types—mass market trends, ready to wear and haute couture. A candidate wanting to make a career in fashion designing needs to have a flair for colour and design and excellent drawing skills. They should be passionate about the fashion industry and the world of fashion and be mentally prepared to face cut-throat competition.
Scope of work
Today, there is a lot of scope available for fashion designers who pass out of fashion designing institutes in Delhi. Most of these jobs are high-pressure jobs that also pay extremely well. They include work in market research, designing of textiles, garments, footwear, accessories etc. and their subsequent manufacturing etc. Initially, they start as a trainee designer but can reach the higher stages if they have the required creativity, artistic capabilities and skills. A career in fashion designing is thus as exciting and glamorous as it is demanding.
