On 23 September 2025, School of Engineering and Sciences hosted an insightful guest lecture on ‘Experimental Approaches in Reinforced Concrete Structures: Recent Advancement’ conducted by Dr. Gaurav Sharma, Head of the Department, Lingaya’s Vidyapeeth and Postdoctoral Researcher at Incheon National University, South Korea. The session was attended by various students from the Department of Civil Engineering and Centre of Excellence in Occupational Health, Safety, Fire and Environment.

The session majorly emphasized on integrating Acoustic Emission (AE) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for Synergistic Structural Health Monitoring of FRP Concrete Structures. Dr. Gaurav Sharma began with the growing use of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials in modern construction due to their high strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. He emphasized the challenges associated with monitoring FRP strengthened concrete structures using conventional inspection methods and the advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques as a reliable alternative. The lecture also covered the concept of Acoustic Emission (AE), which enables real-time detection of internal damage such as crack initiation and fiber rupture, while Digital Image Correlation (DIC) provides full-field, high-resolution strain and displacement measurements on structural surfaces. The discussion on the synergistic integration of AE and DIC, offering a comprehensive and accurate approach to Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), left the participants with a deeper understanding of advanced diagnostic techniques and a strong appreciation for their practical relevance in modern structural analysis and monitoring applications.

The session was highly informative, research-oriented, and inspiring, offering students valuable insights into cutting-edge experimental techniques for ensuring safer and more resilient infrastructure. The session was well organized by Dr. Manish Kumar, Assistant Professor.
