The NSS Unit of GD Goenka University organized a special patriotic awareness programme under the themes “Har Ghar Tiranga” and “Vande Mataram @ 150” on 12 August 2026. The programme aimed to inculcate patriotism, national pride, civic responsibility, and awareness about India’s history among students and NSS volunteers.

The programme was conducted under the guidance and coordination of Dr. Kunal Adhikary, NSS Programme Coordinator, GD Goenka University. The event featured an informative lecture on the history of the Indian National Flag, a special session on Vande Mataram, screening of a short film on 14 August – Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, a patriotic Flag March, and an interactive discussion on the responsibilities of NSS volunteers as responsible citizens.

The programme began with an informative lecture on the timeline and historical evolution of the Indian National Flag. Students were introduced to the various stages through which the National Flag evolved before the adoption of the present Tricolour. The session highlighted the significance of saffron, white and green, along with the Ashoka Chakra, and emphasized that the Tricolour represents India’s unity, sovereignty, sacrifices, aspirations, and collective identity.

A special session on “Vande Mataram @ 150” followed the lecture. The historical importance of Vande Mataram and its inspirational role during India’s freedom movement were discussed. Students were encouraged to understand the song’s contribution to the development of national consciousness and its continuing significance in strengthening patriotic spirit and national unity.

A key component of the programme was the screening of a short film on 14 August – Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. The film presented the tragic human consequences of the Partition of India in 1947 and sensitized students to the experiences of displacement, separation of families, loss of lives, and immense suffering endured by millions of people. The screening provided an opportunity for students to reflect upon the painful lessons of history and understand the importance of peace, communal harmony, brotherhood, and national integration.

Following the screening, an awareness discussion was conducted in which students reflected on the importance of remembering history responsibly. It was emphasized that the observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is an opportunity to honour the victims and remember their suffering while strengthening the resolve to prevent division, hatred, and violence in society.

One of the major highlights of the programme was a Flag March by NSS volunteers. Carrying the National Flag and displaying patriotic posters and slogans, the volunteers marched through the university campus to spread the message of national unity, integrity, and pride. The activity generated enthusiasm among students and reinforced the spirit of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.

An interactive discussion was further conducted on the role and responsibilities of NSS volunteers as citizens of India. NSS President Phenil highlighted that NSS volunteers have an important role in promoting social welfare, environmental awareness, cleanliness, community service, national unity, and civic responsibility. Volunteers were encouraged to uphold constitutional values, respect national symbols, demonstrate discipline and leadership, and actively contribute to nation-building.

The discussion also reinforced the NSS motto “Not Me But You,” emphasizing selfless service, empathy, community welfare, and responsibility towards society. Students were motivated to become socially conscious and responsible citizens who can contribute positively to the development of the nation.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from NSS volunteers and students. Through a combination of historical learning, film screening, patriotic activities, awareness discussions, and active participation, the event successfully promoted the values of patriotism, unity, integrity, peace, harmony, discipline, and responsible citizenship.

The celebration concluded with a renewed commitment among the participants to respect the National Flag, cherish the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle, remember the victims and survivors of Partition, promote harmony and national integration, and contribute meaningfully to society.
