Geographical Indications International Conference
The School of Law, GD Goenka University successfully organized the International Conference on “Geographical Indications: Institutions, Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Social Impact” on 10–11 April 2026. The two-day conference brought together academicians, legal experts, researchers, entrepreneurs, policymakers, artisans, and students to deliberate upon the growing significance of Geographical Indications (GIs) in preserving cultural heritage, promoting innovation, and strengthening local economies.
The conference featured 12 thematic tracks covering diverse areas related to Geographical Indications, including intellectual property rights, traditional knowledge protection, sustainable development, rural entrepreneurship, digital technology and GI protection, trade and commerce, agricultural innovations, cultural preservation, handicrafts, textiles, and socio-economic impact. The sessions encouraged interdisciplinary discussions and provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas, research findings, and policy perspectives on the evolving role of GIs in India and globally.
One of the major highlights of the conference was the vibrant exhibition organized alongside the academic sessions. Local artisans and entrepreneurs from Rajasthan, Haryana, and several other states showcased a wide variety of traditional products and crafts that reflected India’s rich cultural diversity and craftsmanship. The exhibition included handicrafts, handloom products, traditional fabrics and textiles, agricultural tools, pottery, artwork, and various indigenous products associated with regional identities and heritage.
The exhibition provided artisans with an opportunity to interact directly with scholars, industry experts, and visitors, thereby promoting awareness regarding the importance of protecting traditional products through Geographical Indications. It also emphasized the role of GI tags in empowering local communities, preserving indigenous knowledge, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The conference successfully created a meaningful dialogue between academia, industry, and grassroots communities. Through its scholarly deliberations and cultural exhibitions, the event highlighted the importance of Geographical Indications as a tool for economic development, entrepreneurship, social inclusion, and preservation of traditional heritage in an increasingly globalized world.
