A Masterclass by Prof. Shilpa Ranade

The Kremiere session at UID by Shilpa Ranade introduced students to animation as a storytelling medium deeply connected to literature, culture, and imagination. Mentored by Ram Mohan, she reflected on the evolution of animation in India and emphasized the importance of developing original narratives rooted in observation and cultural understanding.

Drawing inspiration from Eastern European animation and artists such as Yuri Norstein and Ishu Patel, she discussed how symbolism, folklore, music, and philosophy shape meaningful visual storytelling. She also highlighted the role of archetypes, literary influences, and material exploration through illustration, woodcut printing, and puppet-making in enriching animation practices.

Through her experiences in filmmaking, illustration, and teaching, she encouraged students to look beyond software and focus on narrative depth, experimentation, textures, and cultural context. Overall, the session provided valuable insights into animation as an intellectually rich and emotionally engaging art form driven by storytelling integrity and creative exploration.
