Parthenium Awareness day

news-img

Parthenium hysterophorus, commonly known as parthenium or congress grass or gajar ghas, is an invasive weed that not only affects the agricultural ecosystem but also is harmful to animal and human health. Its allergenic components cause health complications like asthma, skin rashes, etc. Therefore, taking suitable precautions is necessary. Considering its consequences, the School of Agricultural Sciences organised an awareness programme at Government Girls’ High School, Nuh to sensitise school students on how to manage this invasive weed and take precautions while doing so. The UG students, with the guidance of the faculty, organised fun games and recited poetry and story to engage the school children in learning. Later on, a parthenium eradication drive was conducted in the nearby area of the school with the school students and university volunteers to keep the area parthenium-free. All the students were distributed gloves and masks before entering the field for the eradication programme. It was also ensured that all the participants washed their hands after eradicating the parthenium to avoid any skin allergies later on. The students enjoyed the learning and pledged to take an active part in eradicating parthenium and keeping the environment healthy and clean. A total of 60 students and 5 school teachers attended the programme in the presence of the student volunteers and faculty of SoAS, GDGU. At the end, the students were distributed toffees as a small token of love and gratitude.
